Reporting on the Castle Complex Area
June 2015 Update

I. Ahuimanu Elementary
A. Facilities
1. Will be receiving PV panels from the Ka Hei program.  Roof assessment in progress.  Launched in 2014, Ka Hei is a five-year initiative to integrate innovative energy technology with meaningful learning experiences, all while reducing energy costs.  The installation of PV panels and energy efficiency prodcuts such as LED lighting will reduce the DOE’s electric costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars in its first year.

B. Announcements
1. No placement for Principal position yet.  Mrs. Phyllis Shipman is TAing in the interim.

II. Ben Parker Elementary
A. Facilities
1. Reminding the community to defer from walking through the school when traveling to/from Waikalua Road to Kam Hwy.
B. Announcements
1. Vice principal Arlene Medeiros will be retiring end of June 2015

III. Castle High School
A. Facilities
1.  Numerous accessible parking stall improvements, restroom improvements, auditorium seating, Assistive Listening Devices in auditorium, cafeteria, bleachers, and the gym.
2.  Will also be receiving a Photovoltaic Solar Panel System through the Ka Hei program and are currently in the planning and assessment stage.

B. Announcements
1. Diploma pick-up – July 1 and 2 from 7:30 am – 4:00 pm at the Registrar’s Office.  Graduates need to pick up his/hers with a picture ID.  Parent/guardian may pick up for graduate with a picture ID.
2. Final Report Cards – for Underclassmen, will be mailed home IF a self-addressed stamped envelope is turned-in / mailed to the Registrar’s office.  Report cards will also be available for pick-up in July
3. New phone system.  The new main office number is 305-0700.  More info will be forthcoming.
4. Big welcome to Dr. Bernadette Tyrell as the new Principal effective July 1, 2015.  Dr. Tyrell was recently the principal at Sunset Beach Elementary since March of 2011.  Prior to sunset Beach she was the Vice-Principal at S.W. King Intermediate for two years and was also a PE, guidance, Spanish and weight training teacher there for two years.

IV. Heeia Elementary
A. Facilities
1. Covered playcourt construction is progressing.  Students will be able to enjoy indoor recess in an appropriate building instead of their classroom.

B. Announcements
1. Reminding parents KINDERGARTED age has changed.  Starting August 2014, your child must be 5 on or before July 31 to enter Kindergarten.  

V. Kaneohe Elementary
A. Facilities
1. Reroofing Bldg “A” next to the cafeteria

VI. Kapunahala Elementary
A. Facilities
1. Trying to get rid of the feral chickens on campus.  Asking community’s help and to not feed the chickens.

VII. King Intermediate
A. Facilities
1. Civil Defense is replacing the existing Sire Pole in front of Kam Hwy. and the football field.

VIII. Puohala Elementary
A. Facilities
1. Trying to cut the height of the tall trees on the left hillside as you enter our school.  Some neighbors have complained and another work order has been submitted.
2. Will be recoating all school building roofs this fall 2015.

IX. Other Announcements
A. Leadership
1. We bid a fond farewell to our Castle/Kahuku Complex Area Superintendent Mrs. Lea Albert.  Mrs. Albert retires on June 30, 2015.  Mrs. Albert has dedicated 47 years to the Department of Education.  Replacing Mrs. Albert is Mr. Matt Ho.  Mr. Ho began his education career at Kailua High School in 2001.  He went on to serve in several leadership positions including Kailua High School VP, then onto Laie Elementary as a Principal.  While at Laie Elementary, he created viable health and wellness programs through partnerships with UH and the Dept. of Health.  Mr. Ho received his Bachelor’s degree in English and Master’s degree in teaching from the UN-Manoa.
2. We also say goodbye to our Kailua/Kalaheo Complex Area Superintendent Mrs. Suzanne Mulcahey.  Mrs Mulcahey is now the Asst. Supt of the Office of Curriculum Instruction and Student Support.  Replacement for Mrs. Mulcahey is not known at this time.

B. Misc.
1. No summer school in the Castle complex area.
2. Start-up of school – teachers return July 23rd and students return July 29th.
3. Free meals to children 18 years and under thanks to the 2015 Seamless Summer Program (SSP) funded by the US Dept of Agriculture (USDA).  See chart below:
