CLEAN WATER AND NATURAL LANDS

POSTED FROM Councilmember Barbara Marshall's April 2008 Report

CLEAN WATER AND NATURAL LANDS
Nine notable people have agreed to serve as this county's first Clean Water and Natural Lands Commission—the body that will advise the Council on how best to preserve Oahu's important lands. In the 2006 election the voters, many of whom are also county taxpayers, elected to mandate the setting aside of one-half percent of Honolulu's property tax collection to preserve the Island's future.
Monies are to be used to acquire property for, among other things, "protection of watershed lands to preserve water quality and water supply; preservation of forests, beaches, coastal areas and agricultural lands; public outdoor recreation and education, including access to beaches and mountains; preservation of historically important land areas and sites; and protection of significant habitats or ecosystems, including buffer zones."

This Commission has the potential to be a very import advisor to the C&C of Honolulu Council.

Its members are highly qualified and understand conservation and land use.
