Subject: Community involvement and litter reduction on O'ahu

November 8, 2016
Aloha Maurice Radke,

We are writing to you to inform you about an upcoming project being coordinated by Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful to conduct Litter Index Surveys aimed at reducing the amount of litter in Oʻahu’s environment. We are completing litter index surveys to gather information that will provide baseline knowledge about location and severity of litter in order to prioritize clean up areas, education, outreach and management strategies. The project involves gathering volunteers to conduct 10 surveys in each of the nine city council district of Oʻahu, totaling 90 survey sites. Volunteers at each site will be formally trained on surveying according to protocol developed by Keep America Beautiful.

Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful (KHIB) is the State Affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. Their mission is to engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving the community environment and preserving the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands by participation in litter prevention and control, beautification and community greening, solid wastes initiatives and recycling, and community improvement. KHIB is partnering with Kupu RISE, a nonprofit organization working to empower youth to serve their communities by recruiting a Litter Analysis Fellow to oversee and organize the litter index surveys.

We are inviting you and Kaneohe to join our project and assist in our goal of tackling the litter issue on Oʻahu by one of three ways:
1.       Join us for litter surveys in your city council district starting the first week of December, to be completed by mid-January
2.       Become part of annual litter index survey teams
3.       Take advantage of and apply litter data to environmental management in your community
Community involvement is important to foster long lasting, sustainable solutions to our environmental problems. We would like you to join us in our mission to take responsibility for our environment. If you would like to get involved, please contact Blaire Langston at the return address listed below by November 18, 2016.

Aloha nō,
Blaire Langston
