Know the risks we face and plan ahead so we can recover quickly.

Haiku Stairs, State Hospital On Kaneohe Neighborhood Board Agenda

The Kaneohe Neighborhood Board will receive updates about three ongoing concerns when it holds its monthly meeting on Thursday, September 17. The meeting will be held in the cafeteria of Benjamin Parker Elementary School, 45-259 Waikalua Road, starting at 7 p.m.

The updates will focus on:

The future of the Haiku Stairs. The Board’s Haiku Stairs Special Task Force will report on recent developments, including a hearing last month by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, which manages the watershed where the stairs are located. The task force has been working with other groups for more than a year to find a way to make the stairs accessible and safe for public use.

The Hawaii Hazards Awareness and Resilience Program. The Board’s Emergency Management Planning Committee will report. The committee is helping organize an emergency preparedness workshop for Windward Oahu residents on September 23.

Expansion of the Hawaii State Hospital. The Board’s permitted interaction group on the hospital will report. A plan to expand services at the hospital could affect future growth of neighboring Windward Community College. Members of the permitted interaction group were appointed by the Board at its August 20 meeting and toured the State Hospital on August 29.

The Neighborhood Board meeting agenda also will include reports by the Honolulu Police and Fire Departments, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, elected officials and community organizations. Every meeting also includes agenda time for residents to share concerns and information with the Board.
