WINDWARD DISASTER PREPAREDNESS MEETING SCHEDULED FOR NOV. 14

Honolulu – A community meeting on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness is scheduled for Tuesday, November 14 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kailua Intermediate School in the cafeteria. The school is located at 145 S. Kainalu Drive in Kailua.

Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Executive Officer Toby Clairmont will give a presentation on general disaster preparedness, updates on local shelter locations, information on pet friendly shelters and evacuation plans for the elderly and disabled residents.

In addition, in light of recent concerns reading North Korean nuclear and missile tests, he will discuss what the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA) is doing to prepare our state for the nuclear threat, what efforts are being conducted between the counties and what steps it is taking to educate the public and our community. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

Senator Laura Thielen, Representative Cynthia Thielen, and Representative Chris Lee, as well as the Kailua Neighborhood Board's Public Safety, Public Health and Civil Defense Committee, are co-sponsoring the meeting.

Prepare Your Family To Deal With Emergencies Through CERT And Hazard Awareness Classs

Citizen Emergency Response Team (CERT) training is highly recommended for everyone. This is the schedule for the public classes for the month of February: 

DATES:  Sunday, February 7th, 21st, and 28th. 

LOCATIONS:  February 7th, and 21st - Emergency Operations Center, Frank F. Fasi Municipal Building basement, 650 S. King Street, Honolulu. February 28th - Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, Battery Harlow, 3949 Diamond Head Road, Honolulu. 

TIMES: February 7th, and 21st - 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. February 28th - 7:45 am to 2:00 pm. 

Training will prepare you to take care of yourself, your family and your neighbors in the event of a flood, tsunami, hurricane or earthquake.  The better prepared you are, the more comfortably and quickly you can get back to normal.

In addition, our Kaneohe/Kahaluu communities have come together to provide a series of Hazard Awareness and Response Programs to help us how to be prepared as a community to spring back from our next big storm.  The classes are held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at the LDS Church, 46-117 Halaulani St., near King Intermediate School. Turn mauka (toward the mountain) at the King intersection and the Church is a half block on the right. Meeting starts at 6:30 pm.

Amateur Radio Class For Windward Oahu

HAMs are the backbone for emergency communications during a disaster. When cell phones and landlines fail, it is the Amateur Radio operators who communicate with Emergency Management (Civil Defense).

When you have your amateur radio license, you can let the world know what support you and your neighbors need.

You do not need to be out of touch and isolated. HAM radio operators are essential to the resilience of our Windward Communities.
