Hurricane Lane - Prepare now

Hawaii Island and Maui are in a Hurricane Watch which means to prepare now.  Anticipate Oahu to go into a Hurricane Watch possibly later today, so encourage everyone to lower your risks of flying debris by cleaning outside your homes - secure loose objects, bring in hanging plants, outdoor furniture, etc.  Clean rain gutters too.

If you live in a flood prone area, ridge area, coastal area or your home me was built before 1995, tune into local news to see which hurricane shelters will be opened and evacuate to that shelter with your emergency supplies for you and each Member of your family and pets.  Remember-recommend at least 7 gallons of water per person for drinking only and 14 days of food (1200 calories / day for women and 1500 calories / day for men).  Check out www.honolulu.gov/DEM for helpful guidance or your local Civil Defense or Emergency Management Agency for your island.

If you do not live in a flood prone, coastal, ridge area and your home was built after 1995, consider sheltering in place in a middle room such as a interior bathroom/closet that has no windows or minimum window.  You want to put as many walls between you and that hurricane force wind.  Bring your supplies especially an AM/FM radio to ensure you know when it’s safe to come out.  Keep everything shut - doors and windows.  Don’t let the wind come in if at all possible.

If you have cell phones - remember texting uses less bandwidth.  Have an out of state emergency contact and coordinate with that person for your entire family to let that person know you are safe and in turn that emergency contact person sends out a blast to all of you to let you know everyone checked in and are safe.  IPhone / Android phones have an app Friend Finder allowing you to track your loved ones - suggest you do that too.  There are other apps too that do the same thing and most that I’ve seen are free.

Once we go into a Hurricane Warning, we have about 36 hours before it hits so the State Outdoor Warning Siren will sound.  When it does, tune in to local TV / Radio news to see which shelters will be opened.

Unsure if I’ll be able to provide you with updated info after this but please stay calm, prepare now and make sure your family and team members all know what to do and how to get updated information.  Attached are some helpful info –

For you HAM operators – please try to do a radio check between your community team members as well as with other community preparedness groups.  Comms will be important so charge up those radios to be sure those batteries are fully charged.

Planning for the worst; Praying for the best!  Stay Safe everyone!
